It was innocent enough. The entire school was wearing pajamas to school. Cute, sure. Cute for a 5-year old, but for older kids, the teachers, even the janitor —a bit weird.

My daughter loved the idea that she could wear her new Penguin slippers to school. Harmless, right?
One of my Register co-workers and Facebook friend, Julie (also a Stylebinge contributor—the Register’s fashion blog,) HATED the idea of wearing sleepwear in public. After the picture of Kate hit my Facebook page, she definitely had to sound off, as I would expect nothing less from her.
As a part time style writer I view this as the decline of Western Civilization.. forget reading scores … what about style points? And before you all pile on .. Yes, she is adorable — and I think has bridged the gap between PJs and street wear beautifully, but really what message does it send for the school encourage kids to wear PAJAMAS to school? And no, I don’t have kids but if I did, this is one place I’d be a hardliner.
Also, I just had a conversation with a mom who hates this idea but would let her kid go to school in PJs because she wouldn’t want her kid to feel out of place if they wanted to participate… so to be clear, don’t have a problem with kids, don’t have a problem with parents, just have a problem with folks wearing PJs in public
I had to wonder myself. Is this the way to academic success? Or just another reason why critics cry foul that the public school system is going down the tubes?
Do I worry about her elementary education? Nope. Why?
The school consistently is rated one of the top elementary schools in the area. They were named a California Distinguished School last year, and score constantly high test scores and their API ranks at the top 10% in the state. They must be doing something right.
I might question the validity of it all if she was enrolled in a failing school.
Julie does have a point where the pressure to be part of the school pack can seep into your psyche. There does seem to be some contradictory thinking involved: How is following what everybody else does for fear of being ostracized help her become an independently-minded, confident and well-rounded child and adult?
But through the fashion lens, I haven’t got a clue. You should see my wife cringe when it’s my turn to pick out “matching” clothes for Kate.
Julie debates her fellow blogger, Cindy McNatt, on the merits of wearing pajamas in public. You see, Cindy likes to wear them in public, because it’s not a perfect world and they are just so darned comfortable. Celebrities seem love to wear them in public too. Read it on the Style Binge blog, and take their poll: Should people wear pajamas in public?
You know my opinion with toddlers running in diapers only. In a nutshell: I don’t want to see it in public.
So let the Couture experts debate the merits, I have enough to worry about than to think about my contribution to the decline of Western Civilization.
